Overview

In this two-part lesson we'll explore the techniques and history of drone-noter style playing, with an emphasis on right hand technique. Drone-noter style is how the instrument was played for decades—maybe centuries—before Jean Ritchie took it out of the mountains and made it famous. These studies of those techniques offer valuable insight into not only the history of the dulcimer, but the inherent musicality of our instrument. Looking at this can bring a new understanding and appreciation of our humble hog fiddle, regardless of your level of playing.

Butch Ross

Mountain Dulcimer

Butch Ross has been gleefully smashing disparate genres of music together for over ten years. Using the mountain dulcimer as a prism, he has used the instrument to conquer everything from Bach to the Beatles to Radiohead (and everything in between). His restless musical curiosity and virtuosity has made him an in-demand performer at many folk and dulcimer festivals both in the States and abroad.
